HEVC (H.265) is a widely-used international standard. Its successor, VVC (H.266), is now standardized and supports 8K, HDR/WCG, and immersive 360°, VR, and AR. With improved compression efficiency, VVC is under active R&D and patenting and is already in trials. We studied VVC using the open-source VVenC and VVdeC, analyzing the impact of QP and preset speed on encoding and comparing bitstream size, VMAF, and SSIM.
